Malaka Gharib is Nashville-based graphic novelist and editor for NPR. She discusses her new book, It Won’t Always Be Like This, a memoir about her experience visiting her father and his family in Egypt and Qatar over multiple summers throughout her childhood. We also talk about her first graphic novel, I Was Their American Dream, about her experiences growing up as a Filipino-Egyptian-American in Southern California, and Malaka shares a playlist of Arab indie rock, punk and nostalgic ’90s hits, all of which figure into her moving and warmly engaging storytelling.
